Differentiation Factors and Articular Cartilage Regeneration
نویسنده
چکیده
N umerous differentiation factors have been examined for effects on chondrocytes in culture with the goal of sustaining these cells in culture for tissue engineering. This review examines several of these factors and evaluates their successes and shortcomings. As the quality of an engineered tissue is based upon comparisons to the native tissue, discussion of articular cartilage structure and function is also provided. Current therapeutic use of differentiation factors is presented in addition to the latest technologies incorporating differentiation factors in the tissue engineering paradigm.

A Review Study: Using Stem Cells in Cartilage Regeneration and Tissue Engineering
Articular cartilage, the load-bearing tissue of the joint, has limited repair and regeneration ability. The scarcity of treatment modalities for large chondral defects has motivated researchers to engineer cartilage tissue constructs that can meet the functional demands of this tissue in vivo. Cartilage tissue engineering requires 3 components: cells, scaffold, and environment. ...
متن کاملQuantitative Analysis of the Proliferation and Differentiation of Rat Articular Chondrocytes in Alginate 3D Culture
Background: While articular chondrocytes are among those appropriate candidates for cartilage regeneration, the cell dedifferentiation during monolayer culture has limited their application. Several investigations have indicated the usefulness of alginate, but the topic of proliferation and differentiation of chondrocytes in alginate culture has still remained controversial. Methods: Rat articu...
متن کاملMesenchymal Stem Cell Purification from the Articular Cartilage Cell Culture
Objective Articular cartilage as an avascular skeletal tissue possesses limited capacity to heal. On the other hand, it is believed that the regeneration capacity of each tissue is largely related to its stem cell contents. Little is known about the presence of mesenchymal stem cells in articular cartilage tissue. This subject is investigated in the present study. Materials and Methods Artic...
متن کاملMajor biological obstacles for persistent cell-based regeneration of articular cartilage
Hyaline articular cartilage, the load-bearing tissue of the joint, has very limited repair and regeneration capacities. The lack of efficient treatment modalities for large chondral defects has motivated attempts to engineer cartilage constructs in vitro by combining cells, scaffold materials and environmental factors, including growth factors, signaling molecules, and physical influences. Desp...
متن کاملHuman Stem Cells and Articular Cartilage Regeneration
The regeneration of articular cartilage damaged due to trauma and posttraumatic osteoarthritis is an unmet medical need. Current approaches to regeneration and tissue engineering of articular cartilage include the use of chondrocytes, stem cells, scaffolds and signals, including morphogens and growth factors. Stem cells, as a source of cells for articular cartilage regeneration, are a critical ...
